The Exchange Club of San Clemente was chartered in July of 1965. Five local businessmen wanted to create a service organization that would be different from all others. So, the five founders assembled and asked, "What do we know about the inner workings of service organizations?" As the answers came forth, the things they liked were saved and the things they did not like were discarded. Then they identified several thread strengths that would represent the glue to keep a club together and rest is history.
But, what does all that mean? For example, the typical rule to force members make up a missed meetings like other clubs do, was discarded. So too was the regular singing of songs and the regular arbitrarily fining of members. Things they liked were, running the club as a non-democratic organization. The general membership would annually elect a slate of officers and directors, but once in office the board would run the club. The threads of strength were, having a weekly bulletin to inform the troops, staging events for members and guests between working projects to raise money for 35 local charities. These events include an Installation Banquet, a summertime Fishing Derby and Picnic, a Day at the Races, a Christmas Party and three annual golf tournaments.
The thirty-five local charities we support can be found on the Programs & Services Page; but the projects that support them are: The St. Patrick's Day Dinner Dance, is the main event, and is described by outsiders as the social gathering of the year for our community. We also honor the Sheriff and Firemen of the year each November.
Both of these projects have been operational for our entire history. In August we honor The Lifeguard of The Year. We cooperate with the City to man a booth at Cinco de Mayo in Max Berg Park and a few other events round out our year.
You will find our Freedom Shrine in most all of our local schools and public buildings. We are the only service club in San Clemente that is in the Platinum Circle of contributors to the Boys and Girls Club.
Membership to The Exchange Club of San Clemente is by invitation only.
